BOROUGH GREEN PARISH COUNCIL
"The need of quiet , the need of air, the need of exercise, and I believe the sight of sky and of all things growing, seem human need, common to all and not to be dispensed with without great loss.” Octavia Hill in 1888 Plus ca change, eh !
Borough Green Recreation Ground was purchased by Borough Green Parish Council in 1935 from a Local Builder who was persuaded not to develop it. Whilst there was some play equipment, a tennis court and was well used, in 1955 the demand for a proper Sports Facility was met with the Memorial Pavilion, funded by the Women's Institute and a grant from the War Memorial Commission - it was to be our War Memorial
The Group below include from L-R Reg Pulfer, Frank Bangay, then an unknown gentleman, and Bert Bailey at the rear. Behind them you can see the old Maidstone & District Bus Depot. Pamphlet about the Proposed Pavilion
The next picture shows how the excavations were all done by hand by volunteers, with the tractor loaned by ARC so the muck away went to Isles Quarry. The backgrounds are interesting - open fields in those days.
The pictures below are very useful as we plan the refurbishment, they show details such as the retaining walls and wall thickness, drain layouts
Below - Our volunteer builders take a well earned break. Back row with glasses is Frank Bangay, front row centre is Big Jim Allingham, commemorated by Allingham Way.
Below is a postcard sold at the time showing our new Pavilion, and below that a press cutting from the Sevenoaks Chronicle
Borough Green was named the "DIY Village" in an article by the Kent Playing Fields Assn
